Taking Stock Of Our New Basics

If we had asked people what was absolutely vital to their well being four short weeks ago vs the same question today, I believe we would have very different answers. Four weeks ago, I would have most certainly listed the gym among many other conveniences that I had been taking for granted. Social distancing during Coronavirus Stay At Home Orders has essentially brought importance to basic factors that make up our happiness and well being. Food, Family, Friends, Water, Work, Good Health and for some reason, according to the grocery store shelves – toilet paper. That’s it! Most of us are surviving with these essential needs while we thought we needed much more.

Missing Socializing While Social Distancing

One factor that we might miss the most, not surprisingly, is socializing. Happy hour with friends to unwind. Pot luck dinners. Birthday celebrations. Even just going to a restaurant with friends and sharing a meal. Just to name a few. Many of us are finding ourselves craving a direct connection to our friends and family.

Creating New Normals To Maintain Wellbeing

Rather than focusing on what we can’t have right now, we should focus on new ways to unwind and be happy. Most of our external sources of happiness have been removed from our daily routines. We must now look for new normals to keep on track for a healthy lifestyle. This might include working out at home. Going for a 30-minute walk outside (Staying 6 feet away from others). Trying new recipes. Reading that book you never had time for. Getting some extra sleep. Learning a new skill or craft from free Youtube videos. Facetime/zoom calls.

Continue Some Old Traditions In A New Way

Why not have a happy hour or cocktail hour at home? Plan a Facetime call or Zoom meeting with friends and have happy hour together.
